Resources

Below are some free resources I thought you might find interesting.

YouTube Video on Decision Making

If you have taken either of my for-fee courses, you know that my background is in cognitive science and that I like to share interesting research in this area.  I recently ran across a fascinating BBC show on human decision making that is available for viewing on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14Y2Y1CSgFg.  Over 30 years ago I conducted both my Masters and my PhD research on human problem solving, and one of the things that was clear in my data was that human problem solving is not always driven by logic.  That is the theme in this show, and it reports fascinating recent research showing the variety of non-cognitive factors that play into human decision making, including emotions, subliminal messaging and even intuition.  It’s just plain interesting, but it also has implications for designing persuasive web pages.

Article on UX Issues in the Healthcare.gov Debacle

Read one consultant’s analysis of the usability flaws in the recent rollout of the USA’s Affordable Care Act website, healthcare.gov at http://ht.ly/qrLsn.

Online Interviews

I have been interviewed by two other online learning instructors and those recorded interviews are available free online and you might find them interesting.
One is in David Travis’ brand new course Usability Testing Boot Camp.  In my video interview with David I share war stories from my 30 years’ experience doing usability testing.  If you use the link here, you can not only watch the free interview video that is presented in Lecture #5, but you will also be offered a discount of 25% off on the full course list price should you be interested in subscribing.

The other is in John Colley’s Online Learning Podcast, Lecture #8.  John’s podcast includes interviews with lots of other people as well, and each interview also offers marketing tips and course deals.  It’s a great resource.

Another Valuable Resource and a Discount Coupon

VALUABLE RESOURCE

As you may have learned in our free course “Introduction to Web and eCommerce User eXperience Design”, one of the important components of the user experience of many websites is what is known as “persuasion”, or “persuasiveness”. Sites that design in persuasiveness are successful in motivating site visitors to take actions beneficial to the site stakeholders, such as buying products, signing up for newsletters, using web channels rather than other channels, generating leads, etc.

I recently came across a very nice online summary of applicable principles of persuasion called “The Wheel of Persuasion”. You need to provide an email address for access, but that is all, it’s free. Actually, the user experience on The Wheel of Persuasion website is not as usable as it might be (!), but its worth the effort to get in and digest the information provided. Hope you find it useful!

DISCOUNT COUPON

David Travis gave us a coupon to offer OUXI visitors for his course, User Experience: The Ultimate Guide to Usability. List price is $195 but entering coupon code "OUXI" will offer it to you at $149. Click through from the course listing in the "Open Now" group on the OUXI Curriculum page, and then enter the coupon code "OUXI". It’s a terrific course. Thank you David!

VALUABLE RESOURCE

I just found another resource you might find valuable: it is in fact a collection of resources on user experience, almost all free. How To Keep Up To Date on UX Design.
